- French Onion Dip:You can use pre-mixed French onion dip. If you do, omit the sour cream and onion soup mix.
- Condensed soup and mix: Use low-sodium or no-salt versions, or make your own onion soup to control the salt.
- Homemade soup: Replace canned creamed chicken with a homemade version to reduce sodium.
- Chicken: Rotisserie chicken works great (the one from Costco is perfect) or cook frozen breasts in the Instant Pot.
- Add vegetables: Add 1-2 cups of vegetables like green beans, peas, broccoli or sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor and nutritional value.
Chicken Casserole with French Onions Recipe
This dish is prepared in just three simple steps! Quick prep, minimal cleanup, and major flavor make this an epic weeknight or make-ahead meal.
- Mix the ingredients: Preheat the oven to 350°F, then spray a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. Add shredded chicken, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, French onion soup, Swiss cheese, and onion soup mix to a large bowl. Stir to combine.
- Baking: Spread the chicken mixture evenly in the baking dish. Cook uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, until heated through and bubbling around the edges.
- On high, cookand serve:Add the French friesd onions evenly to the top, then cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. Leave to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Crispy onions:To prevent them from burning, add the fried onions in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking. If making ahead or freezing, keep the onions out until ready to cook.

Ingredients
- 4 cups cooked and shredded chicken about 3-4 whole breasts or one large rotisserie chicken
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 (10.5 ounces) can condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1 (10.5 ounces) can french onion soup
- 1 ¼ cup grated Swiss cheese or gruyere cheese
- 1 envelope onion soup mix about 3 tablespoons
- 2½ cups Fried onions package of approximately 1 6 oz
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Add 4 cups cooked, shredded chicken, 1 cup sour cream, 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup, 1 can French onion soup (10.5 ounces)., 1 ¼ cups grated Swiss cheeseAND 1 bag of onion soup mix in a large bowl and stir to combine.

Cook uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, until heated through and bubbling around the edges.

Add 2 ½ cups fried onions upwards and cook for another 5-10 minutes. Leave to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and reheat in 30-second intervals in the microwave.
- Go ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance or freeze for up to 3 months. Cover tightly with cling film (and cling film in case of freezing). Thaw overnight before baking at 350°F for 35-40 minutes, adding crispy onions in the last 5-10 minutes.
